What To Wear To A Photo Session | NJ Family Photographer

NJ Fall Family Photos 2022

When the promise of Fall’s cooler temperatures is in the air, and the thought of sweater weather feels almost welcome, you’re probably starting to think about your Fall family photos. Family photographers in the North East are gearing up for their busiest season, so it’s a good idea to reach out to your favorite photographer to book your session before September!

One of the most frequent questions I get from my clients is what to wear to their Fall family photoshoot.

I want every family to go into their session with confidence and ease that comes with knowing that they LOOK GREAT!

With this in mind, I’ve put together a brief guide to assist you with dressing your entire family for a well-balanced and pulled-together look for your Fall family photos.

Style

As a general rule, I guide my clients for a casual but slightly dressy look. Making sure everyone is on the same page is what’s important here. For example, we don’t want Dad in ripped jeans and a tee while Mom is wearing a cocktail dress.

Coordinating styles can be a challenge if you have some strong-willed budding stylists in your family. It definitely helps to plan your outfits ahead of time so everyone could get on the same wave length.

Color Palette

Your choice of color is probably the most important decision you’ll make for your session besides actually booking it. The good news is, you have options!

·      You could go with a neutral color palette of creams and tans or greys and blues.

·      Choose rich tones like maroons, oranges and browns

·      Go for bold with a pop of a well-saturated yellow

Color is a personal choice and you probably already know very well what colors look good on you. It’s a great starting point.

Comfort

This is a BIG one for me. Being in front of the camera is already challenging for most people and the last thing we want is clothing that’s itchy or too tight. This is true for both kids and adults but I find that children, especially, have a hard time posing and paying attention to my direction if they’re uncomfortable. So, please think Dressy comfort for the whole family.

General Styling Suggestions - What To Wear To A Photoshoot

  • Choose complementary colors over matching outfits

  • Avoid logos and cartoon characters

  • Stay away from thin stripes and checks as these can create undesirable optical illusion in your images

  • If you choose to go with a pattern, have only one family member wear it while the rest are dressed in complementary colors. We want to avoid clashing patterns.

  • Add some personality and visual interest with textures and accessories. Go for nubby sweaters, fur vests and tweed. Scarves, hats, necklaces and belts will also add a great finishing touch.

  • Check your footwear! Nothing ruins a great shot like a beat-up pair of shoes so leave the Crocs and cross trainers at home and opt for your best footwear for the occasion.

So, what are you going to wear to your family photography session this year?

Cheerful Fall Family Portraits In Millburn NJ

Fall is by far my busiest season as I talk to families and watch them get excited about colorful family photos for their Holiday cards and gifts. Every year, as I plan my NJ Fall portrait sessions, I can feel the anticipation building while October transforms the world into a gorgeous tapestry of color.

My Fall family mini sessions and Classic portrait sessions were so gorgeous this year, with families bringing their best smiles! Below, I’m featuring a few images from a cheerful family photography session in Millburn NJ. I was blown away by how composed and cooperative my little two-and-a-half-year old client was!

If you’ve seen or experienced my Fall family portraits, you know I have a weakness for beautiful leaves and try to incorporate them into my Fall family photoshoots whenever possible.

Children love the playful experience, and it gives us something to occupy them with - it’s a great way to distract from the resistance to taking photos, which is very common in young children.

When parents take the time and care to prepare for their Fall family photoshoot, it truly makes the difference. There’s no need for fancy outfits (unless that’s your style, of course) but I do encourage a coordinated look that makes your family look pulled together and flows throughout the images.

I can’t wait to see my returning families next year as well as meet some new friends!

Happy Fall!!!

Fall Mini Sessions NJ - Steinel Family | Family Photographer Millburn NJ

I got to photograph this family and their adorable new pooch Rocky at one of my Fall Mini sessions in Millburn NJ. It was a beautiful bright Fall morning with a slight chill in the air. I loved the dynamic between the siblings and we got to do some fun shots of just the two of them.

Surprisingly, their dog Rocky was a great subject. Given the fact that he was a relatively new puppy for the family and was still pretty young and wild, pulling on the leash in every direction, he posed for me like a true model!

Dogs are always welcome at my family sessions as long as they don’t try to eat me ;) Please do let me know if you’re bringing a pet to your family photoshoot so I can plan your session with them in mind.

Isn’t this family so cute?

Family Photographer Maplewood NJ | Fall Family Photos - The Barreses

If you’re looking for a NJ Family Photographer near Maplewood, please reach out for availability.

Fall was finally showcasing some of its colors in Maplewood as we moved closer to October. As a NJ family photographer, I look forward to this time of year and love scouting locations around Maplewood and South Orange as the foliage turns. The South Mountain Reservation offers some beautiful spots for family photos.

I met the Barrese family at the reservation to capture their Fall family portraits and some playful candid moments.

I absolutely love capturing children’s personalities during my sessions. Alexandra was a bit shy at first but grew more and more curious about me and my big camera as we moved through our session. We did so well, in fact, that we got to two different locations during our photoshoot in Maplewood NJ.

Check out some of their family moments and reach out when you’re ready to book your family photos :)
